Current economic situation
The general social, economic and cultural situation in Algeria is characterised by an upward trend. The liberal government led by President Bouteflika increasingly confesses to free market economy and enjoys recognisable successes. Private enterprises are being promoted, and state grants and orders have a favourable effect on the economic climate.
Crude oil and natural gas are the driving motors for the current fast economic development of the country. Producing 1.86 million barrel of oil a day, Algeria is the second biggest oil producer in Africa and the fifth biggest gas producer worldwide.
Having a population of 32 million, among them some 4 million in the Algiers region, the country is one of the largest markets in Northern Africa.
In 2003, the gross domestic product amounted to US$62.1 billion, the surplus in the public sector more than 3%. The 2003 imports were worth US$13.3 billion, the rate of inflation was 3.5%. Due to the large income from raw material sales, the currency reserves are at a record level.
Apart from investments primarily made in the oil and natural gas sectors as well as in the infrastructure, the health care reform makes it necessary to put emphasis on investments in medical engineering and pharmacology.
Market situation in the health care sector
In the basic infrastructural sectors like health care, the Algerian government has planned immense nationwide investments in order to gradually raise the basic equipment and technology to the European level. In addition to the 227 state-run hospitals and clinics (13 university clinics), licensed private clinics and hospitals are becoming ever more important as a second pillar of general medical care provided to the population.
Of the approx. 30,000 physicians and dentists, some 5,000 are currently independent, general practitioners. At present, the pharmaceutical association has some 10,000 members, and the dentists' and opticians' association 10,000 and approx. 7,000 members, respectively.
Key investment figures for 2004:

$ 830 million |

| - Local drug production: |
