Eye injuries on the rise

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's hard to believe, with a lot of us now working in front of computers, that the number of days lost due to eye injuries is actually on the rise.

The trend is prompting the BC Association of Optometrists to talk about eye care.

An extra 700 work days were lost in 2007, compared to 2006, due to eye injury.

Optometrist, Doctor Mini Randhawa, says most on the job injuries are related to foreign objects getting lodged in the eye.

"You know it's something that could be very simple - from dust or particles that are in the air, to things that are more severe like chemical fluids, to even nails."

She warns even office workers have to take care of their eyes, by being conscious of how much time is spent in front of the computer.

She suggests to take a few minutes every two hours to focus on far away objects, and to make sure the monitor is at a decent distance from your eyes.

And make sure you see your optometrist at least every two years.
